Background
As expectations around everyday carry evolve, functionality and structure are no longer the only considerations. Visual identity and personal expression have become increasingly important. However, many modular products remain neutral and purely function-driven, offering limited variation in appearance and tactile experience.
This raised a design question:
How can color and material be introduced into an existing system without altering its core functionality?
Design Approach
Combo Case Colors builds on the existing modular system, shifting the focus toward visual, material, and sensory variation.
The product retains the original wool felt structure and large-area Velcro interface, ensuring that functionality and flexibility remain unchanged. At the same time, it introduces a range of color options and specially designed Velcro surfaces to create greater visual diversity and tactile depth.
Rather than adding new functions, the design reinterprets how the system is perceived and experienced.
Key Design Decisions
Color as a System Element
Introduces multiple color variations
Enables different visual identities across use cases
Redesigned Velcro Surface
Enhances the expression of the modular system
Adds variation in texture and visual layering
Maintaining the Modular Structure
Retains existing component configuration logic
Supports flexible arrangement and everyday adaptability
Separating Form and Function
Visual changes do not alter usability
Preserves consistency and intuitive interaction
User Value
Expanded personal expression — Adds individuality within a consistent system
Increased recognizability — Color improves visibility and differentiation
Consistent usability — Maintains the same interaction and configuration logic
Enhanced sensory experience — Combines visual and tactile qualities
Conclusion
Combo Case Color does not change how the system works—it changes how it is perceived.
By introducing color and material variation, the design extends modular carry into a more expressive dimension, where function remains constant while experience becomes more personal.
